We're here to help

Updated: May 1, 2023

Welcome to Birthright Whanganui! We support single carers to create secure, loving, healthy homes for the children in their care. Most often our clients are the biological parents of the children they care for, however, this is not always the case. We have many clients who are responsible for the day-to-day care of grandchildren, nieces/nephews, extended whanau, and foster children. We find there is no typical reason why they are parenting alone, and that circumstances vary greatly.

Single parenthood is a difficult journey, with many obstacles and challenges. Many carers struggle with limited finances, lack of affordable housing, and lack of support from family and friends. These challenges can lead to isolation, depression, and a sense of hopelessness. Our aim is to provide a holistic approach that addresses the various needs of single carers, helping them to become self-sufficient and resilient, thereby enabling children to thrive and grow into healthy adults.

We understand that the children of single carers are more likely to experience poverty, inequality, low academic achievement, and behavioural problems. We also understand that those who experience inequality are more likely to experience serious health problems. By providing support to single carers, we are investing in the future of our community, ensuring that all children have the opportunity to thrive.

The staff at Birthright Whanganui know that each person we meet is different and complex in their own needs. We approach everyone with respect and understanding, knowing that everybody has their own story, and we listen to the stories with open minds and no judgement. We know it is not helpful to say "At least you have..." or "You should be doing..." We are not here to tell you what to do, we are here to help you discover the right way for you and your family to blossom. We know that every individual has great potential, and we want to help you find it.

With many years' experience in parenting, and ample training in various areas, we are able to deliver tips and strategies that can help you in your home. Whether this is with your children and developing healthy boundaries, your budgeting and meal planning, or finding your own strength and empowerment, we have something for you. We'll be out in the community each week, visiting families and facilitating groups. We are also available by phone and text if you need to speak to someone. And coming into our service is as easy as reaching out here, via phone, text, or email.

We look forward to meeting you.
